Consultative Services for Parents

Parents play a duel role in the lives of their school-age children. The most common function is the traditional parenting role, to provide for all their needs outside of school. The other job centers on the parents’ involvement with their children’s school, the organization that shoulders the responsibility of education. What should the role of the parent be and how should the relationship between home and school be described?

The Torah tells us that the obligation to educate children falls directly on the parents. The school concept evolved to provide parents who were unable to educate their children themselves an agent to serve in their stead. However, the agent concept by no means suggests that parents abdicate total responsibility for their children in a school setting to leave everything in the hands of teachers. Especially during the elementary and high school years when children are dependent on their parents, even those in boarding situations, parent involvement is necessary and should be significant.

I describe the relationship between home and school as a partnership. As partners, both parties have separate and shared responsibilities.  It’s essential for children to experience a successful and fulfilling school career that the partnership is highly effective. Each partner needs to know what their responsibilities are and to fulfill them.

Throughout my career I have strongly promoted the home school partnership and have guided parents and school personnel to strike an effective relationship.
